Inspired By
Robert Dudley Best
Born in 1892 to the family that were partners in the large lighting manufacturers, Best & Lloyd. Despite the company's proud history of providing traditional lamps to a prestigious clientele, including Titanic and the Orient Express, Dudley Best was interested in a new collection that symbolised the spirit of the new age by appealing to the more avant-garde architects and setting a new agenda for lamp design. Inspired by what he had seen, Robert began his studies of industrial design in Paris and Düsseldorf, where he became close friends with Walter Gropius, the founder of the Bauhaus movement. It was during this time that he made the first sketches of what would become the iconic Bestlite design. Although Robert had great expectations for the Bestlite, the first lamps did not quite end up where he expected. They were sold to auto repair shops and the Royal Air Force where they were appreciated for their functionality. Loved by architects and designers the Bestlite is frequently used today in hotels and restaurants. But most of all Robert's Bestlite is found in the homes of people who appreciate the genuine and independent design.CONTEMPORARY INSPIRATION
AN ATTRACTIVE MODERN SCONCE
Highly influenced by the school of Bauhaus simplicity and clean shapes, the British designer Robert Dudley Best designed the Bestlite Style BL5 Wall Lamp in 1930. With its adjustable arm, both horizontal and vertical, and movable shade, the Bestlite Style BL5 Wall Lamp suits well by the desk, as a bedside lamp or in the kitchen where the light needs to be directed. Bestlite is held in permanent collections at both the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Design Museum in London.
THE VINTAGE AND CONCISE DESIGN
With its clean, simple lines the style of Bestlite Style Wall Lamp - BL5 by Designer Editions will blend perfectly into any environment. A combination of traditional brass finish with contemporary colours of black or white finish gives a fresh, modern twist to the timeless, iconic Bestlite design. The diffuser can be angled in any direction using the ball-joint located on the head, meaning that you can direct the light wherever it is required. Perfect for kitchen, kitchen counter, kitchen island, bedroom, dining room, living room, reading corner, Brooklyn cafe, craft room, bar, restaurant, club, hallway, staircase or anywhere in the house that you see fit.
